Human Situations and me
Eva-Maria Horstick – Artist Statement
My artistic practice is shaped by observation, memory, and transformation. Since 1999 I have been photographing construction sites around the world, urban landscapes, everyday life, and the often-overlooked details that reveal the invisible structures of our environment. Working primarily with analogue photography, I frequently transform my images through natural processes, creating unique works that move between documentary observation and artistic abstraction. Portraits since I was ten years old. Mostly in the 80 teest and untill now a diversity Portfolio exist with people from different countries.
For 22 years, I was married to a police officer. For more than six years, he served as the commander of the Special Forces. During that time, our family lived under constant pressure. For over a decade, we were protected by an official confidentiality order (Auskunftssperre), meaning that our personal information was withheld from public records for security reasons. Throughout those years, I was repeatedly confronted with the consequences of violence, crime, and human suffering. These experiences profoundly shaped my perception of the world and continue to influence my artistic practice.
At the same time, my work is also a search for beauty, hope, and inner balance. Again and again, I turn to nature and the imaginative universe of manga. These subjects offer moments of calm and renewal. They stand in deliberate contrast to the violence and uncertainty I have witnessed, expressing resilience, tenderness, and the enduring power of imagination.
Before dedicating myself entirely to photography and contemporary art, I spent thirteen years organizing international fashion shows. Today, fashion remains an essential part of my artistic language—not as a symbol of consumption, but as a reflection on identity, sustainability, and the environmental impact of fast fashion. Through photography, self-portraiture, archival material, collage, and conceptual staging, I explore the relationship between documentary reality, memory, and artistic transformation.
Many of my collages combine female portraits from my photographic archive, creating new visual narratives that connect past and present, reality and fiction. Each work reflects an ongoing dialogue between personal experience and universal themes, encouraging a deeper awareness of what often remains unseen.
